We live at such a fast pace. We start the day with a mile-long “to-do” list that before the end of the day has doubled. That list is a lot like when I head to Target for that one thing and come out with a shopping cart full of things I guess I needed. On top of our work we have our Mt. Everest of laundry (it’s just a load away from touching the ceiling), and our kids need taxi service to this soccer game and that music lesson. Then it’s time to address that age old question, “What’s for dinner?” Add to that anything we are dealing with involving our health, relationships, or life circumstances. It’s no wonder that by the time our head hits our pillow we feel defeated. We fool ourselves into believing that everyone else can keep up and that we are the only ones who can’t seem to cut it. We are beyond tired……we need a rest.
I think our culture has pushed us into believing that old saying, “We can rest when we are dead.” The reasons we buy into this thinking are many. Maybe we think we will be passed up at work if we don’t put in insane hours. Or we think we will lose our super parent club member card. It may have been we were told by some “well intended” church leader that we should stay busy with church activities. While some of that is good, we all know how fast we can over extend ourselves by being a part of too many good things. So we come to this place where we have to cut a “few” things, but what? And once we have decided on what we will cut, can we be content with our newly dialed back schedule?
In Genesis God clearly shares with us that rest should be a part of our week. He rested after a huge week. In the 23rd Psalm He “makes us lie down in green pastures, He restores our soul.” Okay so we get it, we should rest, but how do we go about it? Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go: I will counsel you with My eye upon you.” Maybe the first step is that we talk with our Heavenly Father, asking Him to point out things that should fall off our list and prove to be meaningless. He will show us, we just have to REST in Him.
