According to Merriam-Webster, a simile is “a figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as”.

According to author Rick Mattson, similes and analogies can be used to effectively communicate Biblical truths to the unsaved.

Rick is an apologetics specialist for InterVarsity, and has written the book Faith is Like Skydiving

So what do we do when confronted by the tough questions of Christian faith? Mattson explains why analogies can be so effective when sharing the Gospel:

“If you were going to jump out of a plane, you’d check out the plane, you’d check out the pilot, the company, the statistics, the parachute, all of the gear. You’d check that out so that you’re not just jumping out of a plane blindly. You’ve looked at the evidence that you’re going to be safe, and yet, you’ve still got to open the door and jump. That’s the first analogy in the book, an analogy for faith.”

Faith is Like Skydiving is filled with dozens of analogies to answer some of the Christian faith’s most challenging questions. You can hear a few more examples from Faith Radio Mornings:
